The Yonex PERCEPT 97 is the versatile "sweet spot" of the Percept lineup, designed for advanced players who want the control of a 97-square-inch head but require more spin potential and a slightly lighter feel than the heavy "D" (Dense) version.
It serves as the direct successor to the VCORE PRO 97, emphasizing a "connected" feel between the player and the ball.
Key Technologies
- Servo Filter: A vibration-absorbing film placed within the graphite. This is the "secret sauce" of the Percept line, as it filters out the harsh vibrations of a thin-beam racquet while keeping the sensory feedback clear so you know exactly where you hit the ball.
- FlexCon System: An elongated box-frame shaft design that allows the racquet to flex more naturally. This increases "dwell time" (the fraction of a second the ball stays on the strings), allowing for better placement.
- 2G-NAMD Flex Force: This specialized graphite allows the frame to flex upon impact but snap back to its original shape rapidly. This "snap-back" is what helps generate pace and spin despite the racquet's flexible, control-oriented nature.
- Isometric™ Head Shape: Yonex’s iconic square-shaped head. By squaring the corners, the racquet provides a 7% larger sweet spot compared to a traditional round 97 sq. in. frame, making it more forgiving on off-center hits.
On-Court Performance
- Precision & Feel: This is a "scalpel" on the court. It offers a soft, plush feel that allows for excellent drop shots, angled volleys, and precise placement.
- Spin Potential: The 16x19 string pattern is noticeably more open than the 97D. This allows the strings to "bite" the ball, making it much easier to hit heavy topspin or a skidding backhand slice.
- Maneuverability: At 310g with a significant head-light balance, it feels exceptionally fast in the air. It is much easier to swing over the course of a long three-set match than the 320g version.
Ideal Player Profile
The PERCEPT 97 is designed for Advanced (NTRP 4.5+) players who:
- Have Long, Fast Swings: You need to provide your own power, as the racquet is built to absorb energy rather than launch it.
- Play an All-Court Game: If you transition from the baseline to the net frequently, the maneuverability and touch of the 97 will be its biggest assets.
- Prioritize Arm Health: The low stiffness and Servo Filter technology make this one of the most comfortable performance racquets on the market.
