The Wilson NXT 17G (typically available in Natural/Tan or Black) is the high-performance, thinner gauge version of the industry’s most popular premium multifilament. It is widely considered the ultimate "gut-alternative," offering a level of playability that is nearly indistinguishable from high-end natural gut.

The NXT 17G is constructed using a high-density core of Xycro Microfibers (over 1,000 individual filaments) bonded together with polyurethane (PU). The 17-gauge (1.24 mm) diameter is thinner than the standard 16G, which allows the string bed to stretch more upon impact. This results in a "softer" feel and a significantly larger sweet spot, making even the stiffest racquets feel plush and forgiving.

Performance Profile

  1. Comfort (10/10): This is the gold standard for arm health. The PU resin and microfiber construction absorb massive amounts of vibration, virtually eliminating "harshness" on off-center hits.
  2. Feel & Touch (10/10): The thinner gauge provides superior "ball feedback." You can feel the ball sink into the strings (ball pocketing), which is essential for drop shots, volleys, and precise placement.
  3. Power (9/10): Highly elastic. The string acts like a springboard, providing effortless depth and pace, which is particularly helpful for players with shorter or more compact swing styles.
  4. Spin (8/10): For a non-polyester string, the 17G offers excellent spin. The thinner profile "bites" into the ball's felt more effectively than the 16G version.

Best Suited For

  1. Players with Joint Issues: If you struggle with Tennis Elbow or shoulder pain, the 17G is the softest, most protective gauge in the NXT lineup.
  2. Finesse & Touch Players: Ideal for the "all-court" player who relies on variety, touch volleys, and delicate angles.
  3. Low-Powered "Player" Racquets: If you use a heavy, control-oriented frame (like a Wilson Pro Staff), this string helps open up the sweet spot and add necessary power.
  4. Non-String Breakers: Best for players who don't frequently snap strings but want the highest level of performance for as long as the string remains in the racquet.

Comparison Note:

If you break this string in less than 10 hours of play, you should move up to the NXT 16G. However, if you want the "purest" hitting experience available in a synthetic string, the 17G is the superior choice.
